CD Storage Basics

CD storage options are becoming much more popular as the generation that grew up in the 90’s ages, and wants to keep a hold of the music they remember young life by.  Possibly you have seen someone with hundreds upon hundreds of CD’s and they are kept in tubs of large boxes in the garage.  Although compact discs are much more durable than cassettes or old vinyl records, they still need to be properly stored in order to maintain ideal playing conditions in the future.  There is nothing as discouraging as digging out your favorite CD from back in 1992 to only find out it has been damaged by sun or scratches and won’t play.  Finding and using a safe and secure CD storage tower or other device will keep your music and software collection working problem-free for years to come.

CD Storage Towers

With a simple CD tower unit you can easily see the spine of each CD jewel case and determine which is which.  These units often swivel and can hold CD cases in both the front and rear of the unit.  They can easily be found at your local Target store, but the best quality tower storage units are always found online from professional music storage providers.  As with most different kinds of collections, size will determine what kind of CD storage tower.  If your CD collection is around a few hundred discs, a larger tower will probably be able to hold almost all of your collection.  However, choose the unit you want carefully as many tower units can become a bit wobbly when full, especially on carpet.  Sometimes it may be better to purchase two units for future growth of your collection.

CD Storage Racks

Another option is to buy CD storage racks that will screw into, or otherwise attach to your wall.  These units are especially important if you have small children in your home that could bump into a CD case and make it fall, hurting the child.  In fact, many large media storage furniture companies will include special tools and equipment to make securing a CD storage rack against a wall much easier.  It is important to keep in mind that with many CD storage units, depth of the rack is very minimal.  Because the standard CD case is only about 5.5 inches deep, a common rack size is less than six inches deep.  This means many shelf units can easily be put in a hall or entry way and not cause any problems at all.

CD Storage Drawers

In other situations you may want to make the unit you store CD’s in do double duty and possibly hold a TV, stereo or other items.  Many standard entertainment stands come with, or can be altered to accommodate, CD storage drawers.  Many times these drawers have some plastic inserts that hold each CD case individually and make finding a particular CD in your collection much easier.  If you are looking for a chest of CD storage drawers, almost like a clothes dresser, you can find them almost exclusively online.  Many times a larger set of drawers like this will hold hundreds of not thousands of compact discs and even tapes and vinyl records.  You should note however, that these drawers can become very heavy and should be set on rollers for ease of use.
